The Island

Hidden in the northern Okavango Delta

Samonyana is a small island set among ancient trees, open floodplains, and winding channels — a landscape alive with wildlife in every direction.

Elephants move quietly through the island. Fish eagles call across the water. At night, the stars stretch across an untouched sky.

This is not a large safari lodge. Samonyana is intentionally small — a place where guests can slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the Delta in a more personal way. The island serves as both a peaceful retreat and a base from which to explore the surrounding wilderness.

A Different Kind of Delta Experience

Most Okavango camps follow a fixed safari schedule.
Samonyana offers something different.

Here you have the freedom to shape your own experience. Spend the morning exploring the channels by boat, watch birds from the deck, take a quiet walk around the island, or simply sit and listen to the rhythm of the Delta.

This is a place for those who value space, simplicity, and genuine connection to nature.

The Camp

Simple, comfortable, designed for the wild.

  • Safari Tents × 3

Each tent accommodates two guests with comfortable twin or double beds, quality linen, ensuite bathroom facilities, and views across the surrounding bush and water.

  • Family Tent

A larger tent with a double bed for parents, an adjoining room with three beds for children, and private bathroom facilities — ideal for families.

  • Elevated Viewing Lounge

A shared lounge perched above the surrounding wilderness — the perfect place to watch the delta move through the day.

  • Camp Kitchen

A communal kitchen fully equipped for self-catering. Prepare your own meals, share food around the table, and settle into the rhythm of island life.

  • Shaded Relaxation Area

A cool, quiet space to retreat during the heat of the day — read, rest, or simply listen to the sounds of the delta around you.

  • Fire Pit

Evenings under the stars around an open fire. Simple, timeless, and one of the most memorable parts of any Samonyana stay.

Self-Cater Delta Freedom

A rare self-catering experience in the Okavango

Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen and can prepare their own meals while enjoying the relaxed rhythm of island life.

Basic groceries can be purchased from a nearby village approximately 20 km away. Larger supplies can be bought in Maun before travelling to the island. Additional provisions can also be arranged to be flown in on one of the daily flights into the Delta.

A Rare Self-Drive Delta Experience

Drive onto a private island in the Okavango

During certain times of the year, guests can reach Samonyana by 4×4 vehicle and camp with their own overlanding rigs — a unique opportunity in the Okavango Delta, where most camps are accessible only by aircraft.

For adventurous travellers, the journey to Samonyana becomes part of the experience — travelling through remote landscapes before arriving at a private island in one of Africa's most remarkable ecosystems.

Getting There

Samonyana can be reached by air or by road

By Air

Charter flight from Maun

Fly into Maun — Botswana's gateway to the Okavango Delta — and take a short charter flight to a nearby airstrip. Boat transfers from the airstrip to the island are arranged on arrival.

By Road

Self-drive via the northern Delta

During certain seasons the island can be reached by 4×4 vehicle. Self-drive access makes Samonyana one of the few places in the Okavango where visitors can arrive by overland adventure.

A Place Worth Protecting

Guests become part of the conservation story

Samonyana sits within one of the world's most important wilderness ecosystems. The island is part of an ongoing effort to protect the ancient trees and fragile landscapes of the Delta. Guests visiting Samonyana help support conservation efforts that protect this land for generations to come.
