4WD transfer through the bush near Samonyana

By Road & Boat

Self-drive for the adventurous

For most guests, the self-drive route means driving to the mainland pickup point and taking a short boat transfer to the island. But for adventurous travellers with the right vehicle, there is another option entirely.

At certain times of year, when water levels allow, it is possible to drive directly onto the island. This involves crossing shallow water channels and flooded terrain — a genuinely exciting bush driving experience that very few destinations in Africa can offer. In exceptionally dry periods, the crossing has even been made in a two-wheel-drive vehicle, though a high-clearance 4×4 with snorkel is always recommended.
