Location & Geography
Where channels meet sky
Rising from the intersection of three major delta channels, Samonyana is an island born of water and ancient woodland. The island itself covers 6.5 hectares — riverine forest, open floodplains, papyrus swamps, and sandy ridges sheltering under a cathedral of fig and leadwood trees.
But the island is only the beginning. By boat and on foot, the surrounding wilderness is yours to explore freely — an open expanse of channels, lagoons, floodplains, and islands with no fences and no boundaries. Unlike many delta destinations, Samonyana sits at the heart of a permanent water system, meaning exceptional wildlife is possible year-round. Access is by boat only, typically a 5-minute transfer from the mainland.

Wildlife
The island's wild residents
Samonyana supports populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, leopard, and wild dog — alongside a spectacular avian community of over 340 recorded species. Sitatunga wade through the papyrus; reedbuck graze the floodplains; fish eagles call across the channels.
Because the island is exclusive-use, wildlife moves freely without the disturbance of multiple vehicles or groups. You may wake to elephant at the edge of camp. That is not a problem — it's the experience.

The Water
Life defined by the delta
The delta's seasonal flood transforms Samonyana twice a year. As the Okavango's waters spread southward from Angola, the island's character shifts — from lush woodland to a labyrinth of water channels navigable only by boat or mokoro.
Both states are spectacular and offer different experiences. The water is where you'll spend most of your time — fishing at dawn, exploring channels by afternoon, watching the sunset from a sandbar.
Self-Cater, Explained
What self-cater means here
Samonyana is not a lodge. There are no chefs, no waiters, no sundowner trays delivered at 5pm. You are responsible for your own meals, your own schedule, and your own experience. That's the whole point.
The Camp
What we provide
4 double tents
Four fully furnished double tents, each with proper beds and quality linen. Comfortably appointed — this is glamping done right, not backpacker camping.
Bush bathrooms
Each tent has its own private bush bathroom — warm shower and flush toilet in a dedicated outdoor enclosure. Al fresco bathing under the stars, with all the comfort that matters.
Camp kitchen & braai
A fully equipped camp kitchen with gas burners, cooler boxes, cookware, utensils, and crockery. Plus a dedicated braai area for open-fire cooking.
Boat + basic equipment
An aluminium boat with outboard motor, life jackets, basic fishing rods and tackle.
Solar power
Off-grid solar system powering lighting, fans, device charging, and the camp kitchen. Hot water via solar.
Starlink internet
Samonyana has Starlink satellite internet. Stay connected if you need to — or leave the laptop in the tent. Mobile signal remains limited, but internet access is available.
Your Responsibility
What you take responsibility for
- All food, groceries, and beverages (we can pre-stock if arranged in advance)
- Towels and personal toiletries
- Sun protection, insect repellent, and any medications
- Warm layers for evenings (it can be cold, especially in winter)
- Your fishing licence if you plan to fish
- Shoes suitable for walking on uneven bush terrain
Optional provision service
If you'd prefer not to pack groceries yourself, we can arrange pre-stocking the camp before your arrival. Contact us when you book.
Safety & Practical Realities
What you need to know
Wildlife is wild
Elephant, hippo, buffalo, and crocodile are present on and around the island. We provide a briefing before arrival. Common sense and appropriate caution are essential. Children must be supervised at all times near water and at night.
The boat
The included boat has an outboard motor. Basic boat-handling experience is helpful. Life jackets are provided and must be worn on the water. A satellite communicator is available for emergencies.
Medical & emergencies
The nearest medical facility is approximately 1–2 hours away. Medical evacuation is available via light aircraft from Seronga airfield. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel and medical insurance for all guests.
Connectivity
Samonyana has Starlink satellite internet — so you can stay connected if you need to. Mobile signal remains extremely limited. A satellite communicator is also available for emergency contact.
Seasonality & Water Levels
When to come
Dry Season (May–Oct)
Peak wildlife concentration. Animals cluster around permanent water. Clear skies, minimal insects, cool to warm days. The best time for game viewing and fishing. High season pricing applies.
Flood Season (Nov–Apr)
The delta fills with water from Angolan rains. Lush, green, and spectacular — but different. More water means more channels to explore by boat or mokoro. Birdlife is extraordinary. Warmer temperatures. Off-season rates available.
Water levels vary year to year. We provide a pre-arrival briefing with current conditions. Samonyana is open year-round — both seasons offer genuine, unforgettable experiences.
