Important Information

Read this before you enquire

We would rather you know exactly what Samonyana is — and isn't — before you book. This page exists to save both of us time.

Honest Self-Qualification

Is Samonyana right for you?

This is probably for you if…

  • You want a private, uninterrupted experience with no other guests
  • You are comfortable (or excited) about cooking outdoors — camp kitchen, braai, open fire
  • You have some experience with remote or off-grid travel
  • You appreciate being in nature — Starlink internet is available, but mobile signal is limited
  • You find genuine wilderness more compelling than a manicured resort
  • You want to set your own schedule — or have no schedule at all
  • Children in your group are old enough to be supervised in a wildlife environment

This is probably not for you if…

  • You expect 24/7 service staff or a concierge on call
  • You expect a full lodge or hotel experience with staff on call
  • You are uncomfortable being in close proximity to large wildlife
  • You require medical equipment or specialist care nearby
  • You have never handled a boat and are not willing to learn the basics
  • You prefer a structured itinerary with guided activities every day

The Details

Everything you need to know

01.This is a self-cater experience

There are no chefs, no waiters, and no room service. The camp has a shared outdoor kitchen with gas burners, cooler boxes, cookware, utensils, and crockery — plus a dedicated braai area. You buy your groceries before arrival (or we pre-stock for you at extra cost) and you cook your own meals. Many guests find this is one of the highlights — eating fresh-caught fish over the fire as elephants move through camp is hard to beat.

02.The island is off-grid and remote

Samonyana runs on solar power. There is no mains electricity, no municipal water, and mobile signal is extremely limited. Hot water comes from a solar geyser. Starlink satellite internet is available at camp. A satellite communicator is also on hand for emergencies. The nearest town is approximately 1–2 hours away by road and boat. This is not an inconvenience — it is the point. But you should understand and embrace it before you arrive.

03.Access is by boat only

The island is reached by a short boat transfer from the mainland (typically 5 minutes). The island includes a boat with outboard motor for your exclusive use. You do not need a boating licence in Botswana for the vessels we use, but basic boat-handling confidence is strongly recommended. We provide a full briefing before departure. If no one in your group has ever driven a motorboat, please mention this when you enquire — we will arrange guidance.

04.Wildlife is real, close, and unmanaged

Elephant, hippo, buffalo, leopard, crocodile, and wild dog are all present on and around the island. They are not behind fences. They are not managed for your comfort or safety — they simply live here. You are the guest in their home. We provide a thorough safety briefing before your arrival. Common sense, appropriate behaviour around wildlife, and constant supervision of children near water are non-negotiable. If this sounds daunting rather than thrilling, Samonyana may not be the right fit.

05.Minimum stay is 3 nights

The logistics of getting to and from the island mean shorter stays are rarely worthwhile. Most guests arrive intending to stay 3 nights and extend when they discover how quickly the place works its way into them. We strongly recommend 5+ nights if your schedule allows.

06.A security deposit is required

A fully refundable security deposit is required at the time of booking. This covers the camp, equipment, and boat. The deposit is returned in full within 7 days of departure, provided no damage has occurred. Full details in the booking terms.

07.Medical cover and insurance

The nearest hospital is several hours away. Medical evacuation is available by light aircraft from Seronga airfield. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation cover for all guests. This is not optional advice — it is essential.
